We are open!

We are delighted to inform you that St Mary’s Calne Sports Centre is now open following the recent advice from the UK Government.

The health and safety of our members, guests and staff remains our number one priority, and as such there are new procedures and protocols now in place. The Sports Centre team have been working hard to prepare the centre for a COVID-Safe re-opening of our facilities.

We strongly encourage all members and guests to watch our new ‘Make the Comeback’ reopening video below, which gives you all the information you need in preparation for your first visit to the Sports Centre, following the lockdown.

Thank you for your continued support during this difficult period. We can’t wait to see you at the Sports Centre again very soon.

What are you doing to protect customers and visitors?

Ahead of reopening, we have reassessed all of our operational procedures and cleaning protocols to ensure a safe reopening for our members, guests and staff.

Social distancing

We have redesigned our gym floor space to allow adequate distancing between equipment and workout areas. Where possible, we have also introduced new one way systems for customers and guests to follow. There are also new capacity restrictions for all areas, including the swimming pool, gym and fitness classes. All areas now need to be pre-booked before you arrive. More information on how to book a session can be found below.

Hygiene and Sanitisation

As well as more regular routine cleaning and allocated disinfecting times by Sports Centre staff, we have provided sanitising wipes, hand gels and anti-bacterial hand soap in all locations around the centre. Before you enter the Sports Centre and as you use the facilities, we expect all customers to frequently maintain personal hygiene and hand sanitising. Disposable blue hand towels are also provided around the centre.

We have had our hot and cold water facilities inspected, tested and serviced regularly during the lockdown period and will continue to do so when we reopen. The water fountain is safe to use, but you must bring a refillable water bottle and not drink directly from the fountain.

The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) have confirmed that the risk of air conditioning spreading Coronavirus (COVID-19) is extremely low. We do not have an air conditioning system that recirculates air at the Sports Centre, but instead our systems provide a fresh air supply from outside.

Fitness Suite

We are following the latest guidance and advice provided by our friends at UK Active, who advise the UK Government regarding the best practice for sports facilities and leisure centres when reopening.

We have therefore reduced the capacity in our fitness suite in order to adhere to social distancing guidance within gyms and health clubs and have also introduced a new booking system for all customers. Gym sessions will need to be pre-booked whilst social distancing guidelines are still in place.

Unfortunately, to control the risk of COVID-19, we no longer provide workout mats or gym towels. Please do not bring a workout towel with you, but use our disposable blue towels instead.

Fitness Classes

Group exercise classes will now take place in the Sports Hall. Please do not enter through the main entrance, but proceed immediately to the hall via the side door, following the signage.

We have set up custom workout stations for each participant and you will be expected to disinfect your workout station before and after every workout. Class sizes have remained the same for most of the group exercise programme and we have reintroduced almost 90% of our previous timetable.

Unfortunately, to control the risk of COVID-19, we no longer provide gym towels or workout mats. Please do not bring a workout towel with you, but use our disposable blue towels instead.

Some class times have also had to be altered to allow a longer changeover between classes. Please arrive no more than 5 minutes before the start of your class. See our new class timetable for more information.

Swimming Pool

We are following regularly updated advice from our friends at PWTAG (Pool water treatment advisory group), who are providing the latest information with regard to the safety of swimming pools and the risk of transmission of COVID-19. Upon the most available research, PWTAG confirm that Coronavirus would be inactivated at the levels of chlorine in swimming pools. The World Health Organisation has also confirmed that swimming in a well maintained, properly chlorinated pool is safe.

We have reduced the capacity of our swimming pool and introduced a new booking system so that social distancing whilst using our swimming pool can be maintained at all times.

Children are permitted to swim during our scheduled ‘Family Swim’ sessions. These sessions are limited to a maximum of 5 people per family (from the same household). Please see our swimming pool timetable for details.

Changing

Gym and fitness class attendees will be expected to arrive changed and ready to exercise as no dry changing rooms are available.

For swimmers, we are operating a ‘beach style’ changing system where you ideally arrive at the Sports Centre with your swimwear underneath your other layers. Please follow the one way systems and use the designated belongings zones on the side of the swimming pool for all possessions and clothing. Normal swimming and supervision policies apply.

After your swimming session, you will need to proceed to the usual male/female/family changing rooms. Please only change in the designated spaces provided in order to maintain social distancing.

Showers

We request that all users try to pre and post shower at home, where possible. There are no shower cubicles available at this time to prevent the risk of COVID-19. There are communal showers available with reduced touch points for customers who are unable to shower at home.

How do I book a gym session, swim session or group exercise class?

Booking is now essential for all areas of the Sports Centre, as even your gym and swimming sessions will now need to be pre booked. We operate a 7 day book ahead policy which operates on a first come, first served basis. Unfortunately we do not operate a waiting list, but instead you can set up an automated email alert on our new app which will notify you should a place become available.

We have just launched our new ‘St Mary’s Health’ App, which is accessible to all members and can be found in the Apple or Android Store. From here you can book all fitness classes, swimming sessions and gym sessions.

If you had our previous St Mary’s Mywellness App, you will need to create a brand new account to be able to access our new booking system. The link can be found below.

Alternatively please call us on 01249 857335. Please note our phone lines will not be open for booking until Saturday 25th July.

What about staff training?

All staff have received our COVID-19 reopening training, to reassure them about the new procedures and processes that have been introduced. All lifeguards and first aiders have had upskill refreshers following the latest Coronavirus advice by RLSS (The Royal Life Saving Society), in addition to health and safety training upon their return to work.

Should you need assistance or treatment by a member of staff, please do not be alarmed by any personal protective equipment (PPE) they may be wearing. Customers may also be requested to use a face shield or mask, upon the need of urgent attention.

Personal protective equipment and disposable cleaning materials are available for all members of staff and all team members will be encouraged to wash and sanitise their hands before the start of and throughout their shift.

I have booked a party or course, will I be refunded?

Yes. Please contact the Sports Centre directly via email and we will arrange a refund once we re-open.

What about Swim School?

The St Mary's Swim School restarted on Thursday 17th September. Full details about our new Swim School procedures can be found here - http://smcsports.co.uk/index.php/swim-school
